ComprehensionThe level of comprehension depends heavily on getting the communication right; however, regardless of this, many people with a learning disability struggle with comprehension. In contrast there are some people with a learning disability whose language skills appear to be very good, yet the comprehension of what has been said is not there. So, in some cases it will be clear early on that there is no comprehension and in others you might be excused for thinking you are ready to wrap up the assignment when in reality, little has been understood. This area of the site is currently being developed and the objective is to provide downloadable information and coping strategies to help advocates secure good comprehension if possible. Look out for these in the coming weeks. Valuable experience of working with people with a learning disability is essential to this section of the website having credibility. Whilst Andover & District Mencap has nearly 50 years experience of working with people with a learning disability, the past experiences of advocates working with people with a learning disability would be a very helpful addition to help secure an up-to-date and valuable resource. Feedback is actively encouraged. |
