Self Directed Support

DA

Hampshire County Council has signed up to In-Control Total, which means it has committed itself to whole system change from the model of social care that has been in place for a decade or more to one called Self Directed Support, where people entitled to support have an Individual Budget and buy in their own care and support.

The first stage of the rollout of Self Directed Support has begun in Basingstoke and the expectation is that it will roll out also in North West Hampshire later. Royal Mencap and Andover & District Mencap are very supportive of this change, which will enable people to be in control of their own lives.

This will bring changes in the way services are commissioned, with individuals purchasing their own care rather than the local authority. There will also be a need to introduce flexibility into the support people need.

We already have experience of providing support to one person using Self Directed Support and we aim to continue to meet people’s needs with quality support when this new system rolls out on a much larger scale. As usual, we will work with our support users to ensure that the transition between systems is seamless and respect their rights and freedoms that the new system brings.
